What are the Different Types of False Confessions as Per Law

There are several different types of false confessions, including voluntary false confessions, coerced-compliant false confessions, and coerced-internalized false confessions.

Voluntary false confessions are statements in which a person admits to a crime that they did not commit of their own free will. These types of false confessions may be motivated by a desire for attention or a desire to protect someone else.

Coerced-compliant false confessions are statements that are made in response to pressure or persuasion from law enforcement or other authorities. These types of false confessions may be made in an effort to escape punishment or to obtain a promised reward.

Coerced-internalized false confessions are statements that are made in response to sustained coercion or manipulation by law enforcement or other authorities. These types of false confessions may occur when a person begins to doubt their own memories or perceptions and comes to believe that they are responsible for the crime, even if they are not.
